A method performed in connection with a handheld communication device for monitoring a context in a battery efficient manner and for detecting a vehicular context, the handheld communication device comprising a GPS hardware component, a network-based position estimation component and a data processor, the method comprising: identifying a non-vehicular context; when the non-vehicular context is not identified, powering on the GPS hardware component and acquiring speed data using the GPS hardware component, determining whether the acquired speed is within predetermined vehicular speed ranges and identifying either a vehicular context or the non-vehicular context; when the vehicular context is not identified, powering off the GPS hardware component to save battery power.

A device includes global positioning circuitry, sensing circuitry, and processing circuitry. The global positioning circuitry, in operation, receives location-related data. The sensing circuitry, in operation, senses data related to the device. The processing circuitry, in operation, determines a motion state of the electronic system based on data sensed by the sensing circuitry, and selects a plurality of control parameters from one or more configuration matrixes based on the determined motion state. The plurality of control parameters includes a power-mode control parameter and a location-determination control parameter. The processing circuitry configures a power-mode of the device based on the power-mode control parameter, and determines a location characteristic of the device based on the received location-related data and the location-determination control parameter.

A module of a mobile device is used to communicate, to a parking server which stores global data relative to parking places in a parking facility, the presence of a vehicle in the parking facility. There is received, via the module, an indication from the parking server of one or more occupied and/or unoccupied parking places in the parking facility. The module is used to detect a parking event of the vehicle relative to one of the one or more occupied and/or unoccupied parking places, and to report the parking event to the parking server.
