SURGICAL INSTRUMENT WITH IMPROVED STOP/START CONTROL DURING A FIRING MOTION
A surgical instrument. The surgical instrument includes an elongated channel, an anvil pivotably connected to the elongated channel, a closure member mechanically coupled to the anvil, an electric motor mechanically coupled to the closure member, a motor controller electrically coupled to the electric motor and a control circuit electrically connected to the motor controller. The control circuit is configured to monitor a first predefined event, monitor a second predefined event, provide a stop signal to the motor controller to stop a closing motion of at least one of the elongated channel and the anvil after an occurrence of the first predefined event, and provide a start signal to the motor controller to start the closing motion of the at least one of the elongated channel and the anvil after an occurrence of a second predefined event.
OVERLAPPING STAPLE PATTERN FOR SURGICAL STAPLER
A surgical stapling instrument includes an anvil and a stapling assembly. The stapling assembly includes first and second staples. The anvil is configured to deform the first and second staples to thereby transition the first and second staples from a non-deformed state to a deformed state. The first staple includes a first crown. The second staple includes a second crown and a first leg disposed at a first angle relative to the second crown in the non-deformed state. The first leg of the second staple is configured to extend over the first crown to form an overlapping staple pattern between the first and second staples when the first and second staples are in the deformed state.
CONTINUOUS STAPLER STRIP FOR USE WITH A SURGICAL STAPLING DEVICE
A continuous strip of staples for use with a surgical stapling device includes an elongated stock of corrugated paper defining a plurality of channels therein. An inner facing side of each channel is configured to support a row of staples thereon and extending therealong and is configured to be slidingly received in a corresponding plurality of slots defined within a cartridge assembly of a stapling device for loading the staples therein. A plurality of indexing apertures is defined in the elongated stock and extends therealong. The plurality of indexing apertures is adapted to engage a staple deformation element of the cartridge assembly during retraction thereof to automatically reload one or more new rows of staples after actuation of the stapling device.
MONITORING HEALING AFTER TISSUE ADJUNCT IMPLANTATION
In general, systems and methods described herein include active or passive sensing mechanisms, such as sensors, that can monitor at least one exposure condition of an adjunct and any medicant(s) retained therein. In some instances, the active or passive sensing mechanisms can also track the extent of the adjunct's and medicant(s)'s exposure, e.g., frequency, intensity, and/or duration).
Compressible Adjuncts with Different Behavioral Zones
Compressible adjuncts for use with a staple cartridge are provided. In one exemplary embodiment, the compressible adjunct includes a non-fibrous adjunct material formed of at least one fused bioabsorbable polymer. The adjunct material is configured to be releasably retained on a staple cartridge and is configured to be delivered to tissue by deployment of staples in the cartridge The adjunct material includes a lattice macrostructure having at least one drug contained therein. The lattice macrostructure is formed of a plurality of unit cells, in which each unit cell is configured to eject a predetermined amount of drug from the adjunct material and the predetermined amount of the drug being a function of a compression profile of the respective unit cell.

A surgical instrument can comprise a handle, a motor, and a shaft extending from the handle. The handle and/or the shaft can define a longitudinal axis. The surgical instrument can further comprise a fastener cartridge comprising a plurality of fasteners removably stored therein, an anvil configured to deform the fasteners, a closure drive configured to move the anvil toward and away from the fastener cartridge which is rotatable about the longitudinal axis, and a firing drive configured to deploy the fasteners from the fastener cartridge which is rotatable about the longitudinal axis. The surgical instrument can further comprise a transmission comprising a first operating configuration which connects the motor to the closure drive and a second operating configuration which connects the motor to the firing drive.

A robotic surgical system for deploying staples from a staple cartridge into tissue is disclosed. The surgical robotic system comprises an end effector, a drive system, a user interface, and a control circuit. The end effector comprises a first jaw and a second jaw movable relative to the first jaw from an open configuration toward a closed configuration. The drive system is configured to effect a motion at the end effector. The drive system comprises a motor and a drive member. The control circuit is configured to activate the drive system to effect the motion at the end effector, monitor a current draw of the motor, pause the drive system intermediate the effected motion at the end effector based on the current draw of the motor, restart the drive system to continue the effected motion at the end effector, and cause the user interface to provide feedback to a user.
Compressible knitted adjuncts with varying fiber features
Stapling assemblies are provided and can include a cartridge and a knitted adjunct configured to be releasably retained on the cartridge. The adjunct includes a first compression zone formed of at least first fibers and second fibers that are interconnected to the first fibers and are arranged in a generally first columnar configuration such that the first compression zone has a first compression strength, and a second compression zone formed of at least the first fibers and third fibers that are different than the second fibers, in which the third fibers are interconnected to the first fibers and arranged in a generally second columnar configuration such that the second compression zone has a second compression strength, in which the first compression strength is different than the second compression strength such that the adjunct has a variable compression strength.

A surgical kit includes a stapling device and a securing ring. The stapling device includes a reload including a trocar member and an anvil assembly including an anvil and an anvil shaft detachably couplable to the trocar member of the reload for unitary movement. The securing ring is selectively securable about the anvil shaft. The securing ring has an annular profile defining an aperture. The securing ring includes first and second portions and an intermediate portion. The first and second portions adjustably overlap each other. The first portion includes a first tab. The second portion includes a hook. The intermediate portion includes a second tab and defines slots to receive the hook of the second portion. When the first and second tabs are displaced relative to each other, the aperture is transitionable from a first state having a first diameter to a second state having a second diameter.
