Tool assembly for a surgical stapling device

A surgical device comprising a first jaw member, a second jaw member, a clamping member and a clamp apparatus is disclosed. The clamping member is slidably positioned to translate at least partially through the first jaw member. The clamping member engages the first jaw member and the second jaw member, and has a knife blade for cutting tissue. A flange of the clamping member is configured to engage a cam surface to pivot the second jaw member with respect to the first jaw member from an open position toward an approximated position. The clamp apparatus is movable from a retracted position to an advanced position for preventing a gap between proximal portions of the first jaw member and the second jaw member from exceeding a predetermined distance. The clamping member and the clamp apparatus are separately movable.

SURGICAL STAPLING DEVICE WITH ARTICULATION BRAKING ASSEMBLY

A surgical stapling device includes a body portion that defines a longitudinal axis and a tool assembly that articulates about an axis transverse to the longitudinal axis. The surgical stapling device includes an articulation member that is supported in the body portion and is movable between retracted and advanced positions to pivot the tool assembly between a non-articulated position and articulated positions. The body portion supports a braking assembly that moves into engagement with the articulation member to stabilize the articulation member when the surgical stapling device is fired.

Stapling system comprising a clamp lockout and a firing lockout

A staple cartridge comprising a cartridge body, staples removably stored in the cartridge body, and a sled configured to drive the staples out of the cartridge body is disclosed. In use, the staple cartridge is seatable in a jaw of a stapling instrument which is positioned opposite a movable jaw. The surgical instrument further comprises a closure lockout which prevents the movable jaw from being closed if the staple cartridge is not seated in the stapling instrument. The surgical instrument also comprises a firing lockout which prevents the stapling instrument from being fired if the sled is not in a proximal unfired position when the staple firing stroke is initiated.

Surgical instruments with articulatable surgical end effectors and rotary driven flexible drive members.

SURGICAL INSTRUMENTS WITH SEGMENTED FLEXIBLE DRIVE ARRANGEMENTS

Surgical instruments with axially movable firing members that are driven by a series of drive components that are loosely linked to each other when traversing an articulation joint of the surgical instrument. The drive components are configured to serially engage a rotary drive member located distal to the articulation joint such that the rotary drive member causes the drive components to form an axially ridged series of said drive components configured to apply an axial drive motion to the firing member.

METHOD OF OPERATING A SURGICAL INSTRUMENT

A method of operating an articulatable surgical instrument. The method includes providing a rotary drive motion to a rotary drive member of a surgical end effector and converting the rotary drive motion to an upper axial motion and a lower axial motion at locations that are distal to the articulation joint. The method further includes applying the upper axial motion to an upper portion of a firing member and applying the lower axial motion to a lower portion of the firing member such that the upper axial motion and lower axial motion drives the firing member distally through the surgical end effector from a starting position to an ending position.

Articulatable surgical instruments that include a firing system configured to selectively move a firing member between a starting position and an ending position. The firing system includes a flexible upper drive member that axially passes through a flexible upper hollow member to provide upper axial drive motions to the firing member. The firing system also includes a flexible lower drive member that axially passes through a lower hollow member to provide lower axial drive motions to the firing member.

SURGICAL INSTRUMENTS WITH FIRING MEMBER CLOSURE FEATURES

Surgical end effectors with first and second jaws that are opened and closed with an axially movable firing member. The firing member is configured to apply a first closure motion to the second jaw to move the second jaw from an open position to a closed position as the firing member is moved in a distal direction from a home position to an ending position. The firing member is further configured to move the second jaw towards the first jaw when the firing member is moved in a proximal direction from the home position.

Surgical instruments that have articulation joints that include a distal joint member and a central joint member that is selectively articulatable relative to the central joint member about a distal articulation axis that is transverse to a shaft axis. The articulation joints may further include a proximal joint member that operably interfaces with the central joint member such that the central joint member is selectively articulatable relative to the proximal joint member about a proximal articulation axis that is transverse to the shaft axis and the distal articulation axis.
