A compact mobile high-frequency Antenna that quickly and quietly self-adjusts to minimize Voltage Standing Wave Ratio (VSWR). Includes a compact tuning coil and a rolling contact. A Reentrant cap serves as a capacitive top hat. A spiral cut enhances the efficiency is this very short antenna. A tough insulating tube covers the antenna to serve as a radome protect the user from RF burns. The use of rolling contacts on a smooth inside diameter of the tuning coil greatly reduces the force to move the contactor as well as the acoustical noise generated when tuning. A controller drives a servo motor to position the contactor to the optimal position within the tuning coil and selects the impedance to connect between the unused end of the tuning coil and the feed point of the antenna to optimize VSWR.

A first edge of a ground plane extends in a first direction. A radiating element is arranged with a gap from the ground plane in a thickness direction of the ground plane. A feed line supplies a radio frequency signal to the radiating element. A pair of stubs are arranged at positions sandwiching the radiating element in the first direction. The stub is connected to the ground plane. In plan view, a distance from the radiating element to the first edge in a second direction orthogonal to the first direction is ¼ or less of a wavelength corresponding to a resonant frequency of the radiating element. Even when the radiating element is arranged close to an edge of the ground plane, disorder of a beam pattern may be reduced.

Single band and multiband wireless antennas are an important element of wireless systems. Competing tradeoffs of overall footprint, performance aspects such as impedance matching and cost require not only consideration but become significant when multiple antenna elements are employed within a single antenna such as to obtain circular polarization transmit and/or receive. Accordingly, it would be beneficial to provide designers of a wide range of electrical devices and systems with compact single or multiple frequency band antennas which, in addition to providing the controlled radiation pattern and circular polarization purity (where required) are impedance matched without substantially increasing the footprint of the antenna and/or the complexity of the microwave/RF circuit interfaced to them, whilst supporting multiple signals to/from multiple antenna elements in antennas employing them. Solutions present achieve this through provisioning one or more capacitive series reactances discretely or in combination with one or more shunt capacitive reactances.
