System and method for directing light into a patients eye

Disorders of the eye can be treated by photobiomodulation therapy according to a device designed to direct light into a patient's eye, no matter the configuration of the eye. The device, including a printed circuit board that includes an array of light delivery devices and a heat sink lens, can be placed proximal to the patient's eye. The light delivery devices can be powered to generate light. The light can be directed into the patient's eye regardless of a position of the patient's eye.

A removable tip for a light energy handpiece comprises a hollow conduit configured to surround a light guide in the handpiece; a support extension having a length longer than a length of the hollow conduit; and a shielding extension coupled to the support extension at an angle less than 180 degrees and located in front of the hollow conduit. The shielding extension is configured to be inserted behind an eyelid and extend to the fornix, the shielding extension comprised of a thermally insulative material.

OPTICAL PROBE

To prove an optical probe that can illuminate an entire desired region at one time, even in a narrow space. An optical probe including: a linear light guide to guide light from a light source device; a planar emitter to be connected to a tip portion of the linear light guide, to emit the light; a reflective surface provided in a part of the planar emitter, to reflect the light having entered the planar emitter; and an emitting surface provided so as to face the reflective surface, to allow the light reflected by the reflective surface to be emitted from a region of the reflective surface.

Devices and methods for novel retinal irradiance distribution modification (IDM) to improve, stabilize or restore vision are described herein. Also encompassed herein are devices and methods to reduce vision loss from diseases, injuries and disorders that involve damaged and/or dysfunctional and/or sensorily deprived retinal cells. Conditions that may be treated using devices and methods described herein include macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma. Therapy provided by retinal IDM devices and methods described herein may also be used in combination with other therapies including, but not limited to, pharmacological, retinal laser, gene and stem cell therapies.

Micro-devices for treatment of an eye

A micro-device for corneal cross-linking treatment includes a body including an outer portion and an inner portion. The outer portion is disposed about a periphery of the inner portion. The inner portion is shaped such that, when the body is positioned against a surface of an eye, the outer portion contacts the surface of the eye and the inner portion defines a chamber over a cornea of the eye. The micro-device includes an illumination system including a micro-optical element coupled to the body. The micro-optical element is configured to direct photoactivating light to the cornea of the eye when the body is positioned against the surface of the eye. The photoactivating light generates cross-linking activity with a cross-linking agent applied to the cornea.

ENHANCING EPITHELIAL INTEGRITY BY A SEQUENCE OF MAGNETIC PULSES

The invention provides a method of noninvasively treating a condition associated with reduced integrity or increased permeability of an epithelial layer by a series of magnetic pulses having a magnitude of up to 3 T, wherein the magnetic pulses are designed to induce an electric field having a magnitude of up to 250 Volt per meter adjacent to a target treatment area, the condition particularly being ocular condition associated with reduced barrier function of the cornea. The invention provides a device for effecting the tissue treatment, creating series of pulses exhibiting a rate of change of more than 200 T/s in the absolute value.

CONTROLLING A SURGICAL SYSTEM USING A FOOTSWITCH

An ophthalmic surgical system comprises a surgical microscope that provides a field of view of a surgical site to a user. A microscope display device displays a graphical overlay and the field of view. The graphical overlay displays fields to adjust configurable settings that modify operation of a surgical instrument. A footswitch receives user input from the user to adjust the configurable settings by: detecting a first movement of a joystick by the user, the first movement representing movement of a cursor relative to the fields; and detecting a second movement of the joystick or a button by the user, the second movement representing a selection of a field. The computer: generates a control signal to adjust the configurable settings in the response to the user input; and outputs the control signal to the surgical instrument to adjust the configurable settings according to the user input.

Devices and approaches for activating cross-linking within corneal tissue to stabilize and strengthen the corneal tissue following an eye therapy treatment. A feedback system is provided to acquire measurements and pass feedback information to a controller. The feedback system may include an interferometer system, a corneal polarimetry system, or other configurations for monitoring cross-linking activity within the cornea. The controller is adapted to analyze the feedback information and adjust treatment to the eye based on the information. Aspects of the feedback system may also be used to monitor and diagnose features of the eye 1. Methods of activating cross-linking according to information provided by a feedback system in order to improve accuracy and safety of a cross-linking therapy are also provided.
