Surgical fastener applying apparatus
A surgical fastener applying apparatus includes an anvil half-section and a cartridge-receiving half-section including an elongated channel member having a pair of opposed openings defined through sidewalls thereof. A disposable assembly including a single use loading unit and a single use firing unit is configured to be releasably supported within the cartridge-receiving half-section. The disposable assembly includes a stationary housing for supporting the firing unit which includes a distal extension for supporting the single use loading unit. The stationary housing includes a pair of flared tabs configured to be releasably received within the openings of the cartridge-receiving half-section to releasably engage the disposable assembly within the cartridge-receiving half-section.
LOCKING MECHANISMS FOR GRASPING DEVICES AND METHODS OF USE
A tissue fastening device includes a body including a plurality of sidewalls defining a channel, an anvil having a proximal end and a distal end and pivotally coupled to the body and the anvil moves between an open position and a closed position, and a locking mechanism to lock the anvil in the closed position.
Surgical instrument comprising a releasable closure drive lock
A surgical instrument comprising an end effector and a closure drive configured to close the end effector is disclosed. The surgical instrument further comprises a lock configured to hold a closure actuator of the closure drive in a partially-closed position. The surgical instrument further comprises an articulation drive operable to rotate the end effector about an articulation joint when the closure drive is in its partially-closed position.
Staple cartridge replacement
A surgical end effector comprising a cartridge jaw is disclosed. The cartridge jaw comprises a proximal channel portion extending along a longitudinal axis, and a distal portion movable relative to the proximal channel portion between an open position and a closed position. The surgical end effector further comprising a staple cartridge removably seated in the cartridge jaw, wherein the staple cartridge is configured to slide along the longitudinal axis into the proximal channel portion of the cartridge jaw when the distal portion is in the open position.
Surgical instrument including an adapter assembly and an articulating surgical loading unit
An adapter assembly includes an articulation nut, an articulation link, and a drive belt operably coupled to a distal portion of the articulation link. The articulation link has a proximal end portion operably coupled to the articulation nut, such that rotation of the articulation nut results in translation of the articulation link. The drive belt has a distal end portion configured to be operably coupled to a proximal end portion of a surgical loading unit, such that movement of the drive belt articulates the surgical loading unit relative to the adapter assembly.
Stapler apparatus and methods for use
Apparatus and methods are provided for performing a medical procedure, such as a laparoscopic appendectomy using a stapler apparatus including a reusable handle portion including a shaft include proximal and distal ends, a disposable end effector attached to the distal end of the shaft of the reusable handle carrying one or more staples. For example, the end effector may include first and second jaws movable relative to one another between open and closed positions, the first jaw carrying a cartridge which includes the one or more staples. A Doppler sensor, a cutting element, and, optionally, a thermal element are also provided on the end effector. The end effector is introduced into a patient's body, tissue is positioned/locked between the jaws, and a plurality of staples are deployed into the tissue. The Doppler sensor is used to confirm that blood flow has discontinued in the stapled tissue, and the cutting element is actuated to sever the stapled tissue.
Surgical staple cartridge including tissue supporting surfaces
A surgical stapler including an anvil, a staple cartridge, and a buttress material removably retained to the anvil and/or staple cartridge. In various embodiments, the staple cartridge can include at least one staple removably stored therein which can, when deployed, or fired, therefrom, contact the buttress material and remove the buttress material from the anvil and/or staple cartridge. In at least one embodiment, the anvil can include at least one lip and/or groove configured to removably retain the buttress material to the anvil until deformable members extending from the surgical staple are bent by the anvil and are directed toward and contact the buttress material.
Stapling instrument comprising a staple cartridge insertion stop
A surgical stapling instrument comprising a cartridge jaw configured to receive a staple cartridge, an anvil jaw, and a firing member configured to eject the staples from the staple cartridge during a firing stroke is disclosed. The anvil jaw comprises a stop extending into the cartridge jaw which prevents the staple cartridge from contacting the firing member when the staple cartridge is inserted into the cartridge jaw.
Shipping wedge for staple cartridge
A shipping wedge (10) for a staple cartridge includes a body (12), an elongate fin (22), at least one tooth (32), and a knife stop (20). The elongate fin (22) is supported on a bottom surface (16) of the body (12). The tooth (32) extends from the bottom surface (16) on the proximal portion of the body (12) and is positioned to be received within a recess formed in the staple cartridge (102). The knife stop (20) extends from a top surface (14) of the proximal end of the body and is positioned to obstruct movement of a knife bar (122) of the staple cartridge (102) when the shipping wedge (10) is attached to the staple cartridge (102). A sled stop member (26) extends from the bottom surface (16) on the proximal portion of the body (12) of the shipping wedge (10) and is positioned to obstruct movement of an actuation sled of the staple cartridge (102).
Handheld electromechanical surgical system
An adapter assembly includes a switch actuator, an actuation bar, and a latch. The switch actuator is movable between a proximal position, in which the switch actuator actuates a switch, and a distal position. The latch is movable between a first position, in which the latch permits proximal movement of the switch actuator, and a second position, in which the latch prevents proximal movement of the switch actuator. The latch is configured to move from the first position toward the second position in response to the actuation bar moving toward a proximal position.
